I want to sincerely thank all the residents of Fall Creek for your support after the tragic loss of one of Harris County’s Deputies, Deputy Darren Goforth, on August 28, 2015. Your heartfelt sentiments are deeply appreciated.

I also want to thank you all for welcoming me to Fall Creek. It was wonderful meeting some of you at the Donuts with the Deputies event we had in July. As you see me patrolling Fall Creek, feel free to come up to me. I enjoy getting to know the residents and sharing tips for crime prevention. To that end, I would like to take this opportunity to discuss some tips on crime prevention and what I have observed patrolling Fall Creek.

There are things that you can do to keep you, your family, and your belongings safe.

First, you need to understand that criminals are opportunistic: if a criminal finds opportunity they are likely to take it. The best thing you can do is to make it more difficult for a crime to take place. For example, as I drive around the neighborhood, I often observe bikes, tools, and personal items left in the front yards.  Sometimes they are near curbside, making it even easier for a potential thief to grab and go. Please put all personal belongings in the garage when not in use. Also, remind your children to put bicycles back in the garage. They often get so excited playing that they forget.

The weather will soon become cooler and you may open the windows to let fresh air in, but do not forget to lock the windows again when you are finished.

Do not make it obvious when you are away from home. The use of automatic timers on lights and televisions when you are not at home is a great way of keeping criminals guessing.

Please do not leave spare keys lying around, especially under the doormat or pot on your front porch.

Most importantly, get to know your neighbors. Neighbors that know each other can tell when something is not right and notify the authorities. I encourage all of you to come to Fall Creek’s National Night Out on Tuesday, October 6. Hopefully, I will get a chance to speak with many of you in person.

Sincerely,
Deputy Gonzalez
