Crews Break Ground on Redstone Golf Academy

(Houston, TX – Aug. 5, 2011)                     Construction has begun on the Dave Williams Golf Academy at Redstone Golf Club, a joint project of the University of Houston and Redstone, which is now the official home course of Houston Cougar golf.

The 4,400-square-foot facility, which should be completed this fall, will house four indoor/outdoor hitting bays with the latest technology, including a launch monitor for players to practice length, dispersion and trajectories of any shot. Also, a SAM PuttLab will take ultrasound measurements of the putting stroke and a three-dimensional biomechanical measuring system will help refine the way a player’s body should properly move during a golf swing.

The academy, costing an estimated $500,000, will be open to the public for golfers of all ages and skill levels. In addition to group and individual lessons, the academy will offer custom club fittings with all the major manufacturers.

The academy is named after Dave Williams, a revered University of Houston golf coach. During his 36-year tenure, Williams led the golf team to 16 National Collegiate Athletic Association championships and 14 conference championships. Just some of the golf titans coached by Williams include Fred Couples, Steve Elkington, John Mahaffey and Bill Rogers. Williams passed away in 1998 at the age of 80.

Located in Fall Creek, Redstone Golf Club offers two 18-hole championships courses — the public Tournament Course designed by Rees Jones and the private Jacobsen Hardy-designed Member Course. A 31,000-square-foot practice range includes a generous practice putting area, a driving range and a short game practice area with chipping and pitching greens, fairway and greenside bunkers. Plus, Redstone’s clubhouse offers a full-service restaurant and two well-outfitted pro shops. Redstone is Houston’s only PGA Tour course.
